Also missed my long run due to yet another friekin snow....... 9 degree wind chills..... just couldnt do it... Ok.... done beating myself up......maybe next week. Did a bike and some core today....(first time in about a month) felt good..... cant wait for the first leg of my triple crown March 7th. Im not ready for the speed (because its just a 5k) but just need to be around some positive energy flow.... get into a race. Just a little afraid Im going to run it at my marathon pace......

Wendesday- 45 min cycling sprints 2 min fast/2 min slow
Thursday- sick (rest)
Fri-sick (rest)
Sat- 90 min cycling (trainer)

Took on a nasty head cold which posed a problem for mid-week training. Getting better, but still headache and congested....rested today in hopes of a better morning tomorrow. Preparing for cycling training this Friday in Austin...4 days of cycling bliss with some good buds. Need to get a decent run in this week, so I hope I feel better to do so. My nutrition stinks when I feel bad too...the down feeling makes it easier to sneak a few extra animal crackers!

Dino Weekly

Mon 7 miles @ 58:23
Wed 1 mile warm up, 3 @ 7:27 with 800m jogs - cool down (6 miles)
Thu 7 miles @ 8:35
Sun 20 mile run @ 9 min flat pace - 2:59:33

had some stressors this week..... working a little overtime. had some photo gigs. going to have to change to 3rd shift for 2 weeks of training on new job - then back to day shift. Im getting yanked around like a bitch boy currently. But thats ok. the running relieves some stressors. Just be glad when i get on a schedule for a while. Have shyed off from the bike and my core workouts, however, my long runs are getting stronger. A full 20 miles, no walking at a nice 9 min. pace. that will put me just under 4 hours for my 26.2. Although, Im done at mile 20...... hope I can hold the pace for the last 6.2 miles.

Strength and Balance Exercises

These are the strength and balance exercises I do at least twice a week.

Weekly Review (Feb. 15)- Karl

Monday Rest
Tuesday 1 hour big gear bike trainer session
Wednesday 45 minute, 5.4 mile run
Thursday 1 hour big gear bike trainer session
Friday 45 minute, 5.5 mile run
Saturday 1:15 high cadence bike trainer session
Sunday 1:05 hours, 7.82 mile run

Had a good week. Feeling strong and recovering really nicely from the additional bike and running miles. Starting runs nice and easy and still keeping a decent overall pace. Can feel the bike sessions strengthening my legs on both the bike and run.

Got lazy with my balance and strength sessions this week. Had some long work days this past week and just wanted to veg when I got home.

Finally received my copy of the 2nd edition of "Going Long", the Ironman distance training book by Joe Friel (Twitter follower) and Gordon Byrn (Facebook "friend"). Mark told me great things about it and it's well known as THE book on long distance triathlon training.

I emailed the Training Bible Coaching group for their advice on how I should plan my training and racing schedule in order to peak for the IMAZ 09. I received a reply that they will get back to me this week. I'm scheduled for the CapTex Tri Olympic distance race on May 25, so time is drawing nigh to begin full-fledged triathlon training. I look forward to receiving their advice and beginning to seriously plan my year with Arizona as the main target.

A couple of things I learned this week: 1. Biking strengthens the run but running does not strengthen biking. 2. Know your resting heart rate. Take your heart rate before training and if it's elevated, do not train that day. An elevated heart rate is the first sign of illness and/or fatigue. It's your body's way of telling you to rest.

Are we in for the GABRAKY bike ride? Jeremy? Ashley? We need to hear from you.

Weekly Review (Feb. 8)- Karl

I posted this on the Wordpress blog last week.

Monday- 45 minute bike trainer session
Tuesday- Travel to Dallas
Wednesday- Travel from Dallas
Thursday- 45 minute bike trainer session
Friday- 45 minute run, 5.1 miles, 8:52 avg. pace
Saturday- 1.5 hour bike trainer session
Sunday- 1 hour run, 6.87 miles, 8:44 avg. pace

Another good week. Gave my legs a couple of weeks off from the half-marathon, so I’m slowly building back up the mileage. This was also my first week adding a long bike session. I plan to continue building some longer bike sessions into the week.
Starting next week, I plan to run for at least 30 minutes off the bike immediately after that long session. As the triathlon season nears, it’s good to get my legs used to running off the bike.Nutrition has been good. I’m not being too strict; just trying to be sensible and moderate.
In closing, I ask you keep our team member Mark in your thoughts. He’s had a killer sinus infection and it’s affected his sight in one eye. He has another doctor appointment on Monday to try to get to the bottom of things. It’s kept him from working or exercising for several days.
Hope the rest of you guys are doing well. I’ve spoken to a few of you this week. I hope to hear from all of you on the blog more regularly. This started as an experiment last year, but I hope it’s grown to something that adds value for all of us. I know I think about my weekly review throughout the week and I especially look forward to hearing from all of you. It motivates to me to know that you guys are out there struggling with life, work, families, and trying to better your lives.

This should be a national law. And no new roads or subdivisions should be built without including running and biking lanes. If we make it easier and safer for people to get out and exercise, perhaps more will.

YouTube - Joe Friel - "Training with Power" Part 1 of 3

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2R0NeqUP4po&NR=1

I'm looking into getting a power meter. They can be crazy expensive, but iBike has one for $199.

Training with power versus heart rate on the bike is supposed to be much better. If you want to get an idea for what a power meter can do for you and how it is to be used, watch Joe Friel's "Training with Power" video series.

IRONMAN..No Author

Found this while doing a search for "direct mailings for hotels" today....hahahahahaha

"... it is an event that seems to possess a personality. It is a a personality that is a reflection of your willingness to perservere. IM is something that signifies a projection of that which you perceive yourself being (or something you want to be). The strange thing is that it is a metamorphosis that you don't realize until later. It's not until it's completed that you feel complete. It's less about the finish line and more about the starting line. It's about trying...and everything in between.I think the real scope of IM is not the physical, geographical course... it's the journey to the course. Preparation is the true test of an IM. Knowing the elevation changes, knowing the water temp, knowing the air temperatures and wind speeds.... are all good things to know. But, believe me when I say, " knowing the course won't amount to a hill of beans when you're 200 yds. from the finish line " . Or, when you can see the transition area and the cut off time for the bike leg is less than a minute away. So, you bust a gut to make it through... only to suffer through the run (if you're lucky?).The way I see it, IM is not a place. It's not a course. It is miles of cumulative small successes defined in one event. It's an adventure in self motivation, preparation, and completion. In the end, it's about sharing losses and sharing the many victories along the way that few truely understand. It is about overcoming your own limitations. When it's over... it's about being an ordinary person who found a reason to become extraordinary for only one brief moment in time. So, you can train for an ironman... you can find out all the idiosyncracies about what ever course you choose... you can learn the details about IM race preperation and all the tid bits...you can learn the lay out of the land (so to speak). But, the real surprise will come when you actually look back and say 'dang, I did what?'. That answer may be clothed in failure or success. But, it really doesn't matter. Because you really didn't know the course... nope, you did more than that. You loved it and hated it...lived and suffered with it.That being said,... what's a good IM course? ...The answer is...ANY of them you try and any that you don't. But rest assured, none will be easy. And, in the big scheme of things, the first IM is about doing - the rest is just details that seem to take the naiveness out of your first attempt. Details that seem understandably important at first... only become less and less significant as you begin this crazy thing called Ironman.Ironmans are something you can study for... but, you can not pull an all nighter and succeed."

Bacon Weekly

Mon- 30 min slow run (15min pace)
Tues- Chest, back, abs
Wed- 45 cycling (trainer) (previous off day)
Thurs- 11 Hill Sprints 8@ 7:30 pace-12%grade; 2@ 7:00 pace-12% grade, 1 @ 6:30-15% grade
Fri- Arms, Shoulders, abs
Saturday- OFF
Sunday- 90 minute run at HR Zone 3 (details below)

Biggie sized the week by replacing an off day with a cycling day on Wednesday. I'm preparing for a spring training cycling trip to Austin with two of Karl and my old friends from Lindsey Wilson College. It was my first ride with the trainer and was really nice...enjoyed indoor training more than i thought. Hill sprints were all increased one level by pace and grade; then upped the ante by juicing them up more towards the end...nothing in the tank for my intervals though. Today's run was my first based the HR zones from the Univ. of Texas VO2 tests and FINALLY outisde..temps in the low 60's. I found it really difficult to keep my HR in the zone...I set my watch to beep when too low or too high and it went off quite alot too high. It forced me to a slower pace than I've been running on the treadmill...ended at 9.28 miles at a 9:43 pace...my past long runs were all on the treadmill at a 8:30 pace...those runs were with no data too. So my main point is..I guess training slower to run faster concept will only be proven in my first half-marathon. I can tell you this though...I'm ready to kick that thing in the behind! I wanted to run faster, but forced myself to stay in the zone. Considering changing my training program to drop some needed fat (suggested from the UT test) before the mini on April 25th...if I break my program now and move to a fat-burning interval style program for 1 month that would put me at about March 8th; then back to my steady and longer program for 1.5 months; then a taper week before the race...gimme your thoughts on this if anyone has any.... Ready for another great training week..I hope you guys are too! Keep on,keep'n on.... The Mack

Weekly Review- Karl

Monday-Wednesday  Rest

Thursday  30 minute bike trainer session

Friday  Off

Saturday  1 hour high cadence bike session

Sunday 30 minute run, 3.62 miles, 8:23 pace

To my teammates in Kentucky, proud of you and your families for handling the worst winter storm in KY’s history with style and grace. It could not have been easy. Don’t let yourselves feel guilty for falling off your training plans. You did what you had to do.

To the Pittsburgh Steelers and their fans, congratulations…but I still hate the Steelers!

It was a nice easy week for me. I read recently that you should take one day off for every mile you run in a race (e.g., 13 days off for a half marathon, 26 days off for a marathon). Granted, that doesn’t mean a complete day off, but it does mean that you should take it easy. After the soreness wore off sometime Wednesday, I figured a nice easy spin on Thursday was in order.

After a nice easy run yesterday, I took the family for a hike at Enchanted Rock State Park. It was AMAZING! A 425 foot elevation change to some 1825 feet above sea level, the hike was steep and the views were magnificent. Look it up on your computers. Jennifer will have some photos uploaded to her Facebook account soon.

Signed up for my first triathlon of the year: the Capital of Texas Triathlon (Olympic distance). That means I’ll be starting a triathlon training program within the month. Need to find access to a pool. Traveling to Fort Worth this Tuesday and Wednesday. Hope to see Mark while in the DFW area.

Bacon Weekly

Well boys, not much to report on the Bacon weekly......ran at the Hard Rock hotel on Monday morning; then nada...After returning from San Diego to the big ice mess in O-boro...had my family, my mom and in-laws all at our house so threw my fitness schedule and nutrition schedule all to bits....Should return to normal next week....will be at gym in the morning and hope all returns on schedule....my mom got power in Madisonville, but Samantha's mom and dad are still here....with so many freezers defrosting...it threw massive amounts of red meat straight to my house...choice cuts that either be eaten or tossed....so we ate...unfortunatly that derailed my other positive habits too...has some ice cream, chips...a bunch of stuff that's never in the house, but our extended families brought a lot in...so it was tough....just considering it a complete rest and cheat week...will probably do me good anyway... 54 degrees today...all is melting....

Dino Weekly

Mon: 8 mile run @ 8:46
Thu: 6 mile run @ 9:32
Fri: 4 mile run @ 8:45, bike 30 min on trainer
Sat: 3 mile run @ 8:58
Sun: 4 mile run @ 8:20

times and distance a little off this week. Amazing what life without electricity will do to you....... really stressed, had to move in with mom and dad for about 4 days.... hectic. An extended family living arrangement will drive a man nuts.... Did some running in the snow and ice.... had to go much slower. Hopefully everything is back to normal...... I now have electricity and hot showers....
